Strange Artifacts

Science presents the picture of the past in which humanity started from primitive beginnings, and steadily progressed upward in the development of culture and science. Most of the artifacts preserved in archaeological and geological records have been neatly arranged to fit this linear view of our past. Yet there are many  “out-of-place artifacts” which don’t fit the established pattern of prehistory, pointing back instead to the existence of advanced civilizations before any of the known ancient cultures came into being.

Mystic Places

Many researchers suggest that mysterious sites around the world were created with help of advanced knowledge and technology possessed by (now lost) ancient civilizations. Others do not believe that there ever was very advanced civilization on earth and all of the superb knowledge was handed down to us by ancient astronauts.
Most scientists do not subscribe to any of these ideas and try to explain ancient enigmas on the ground of  religion and ritual…

Ancient Writings

“All ancient books which have once been called sacred by man, will have their lasting place in the history of mankind, and those who possess the courage, the perseverance, and the self-denial of the true miner, and of the true scholar, will find even in the darkest and dustiest shafts what they are seeking for, — real nuggets of thought, and precious jewels of faith and hope.  ”    — Max Müller, Introduction to the Upanishads Vol. II

The wisdom of our ancestors frequently puzzles modern people. Spiritual approach sees the ancient writings as source of religious methodology of spiritual self-perfection and knowledge about God, life and death, evolution, and the meaning of life. Literal approach treats ancient texts as a source of information about historical events (The Bible becomes a history book). Is there any truth about history of the mankind and our planet in ancient writings, or is it all religious fantasy and fairy tales?

Science Mysteries

“In questions of science the authority of a thousand is not worth the humble reasoning of a single individual.  I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use.”  — Galileo Galilei

“The human mind is not capable of grasping the Universe. We are like a little child entering a huge library. The walls are covered to the ceilings with books in many different tongues. The child knows that someone must have written these books. It does not know who or how. It does not understand the languages in which they are written. But the child notes a definite plan in the arrangement of the books – a mysterious order which it does not comprehend, but only dimly suspects.”  — Albert Einstein

Textbooks present science as a noble search for truth, based on questioning established ideas. But for many scientists  disagreeing with the dominant view is dangerous – especially when that view is backed by powerful interest groups.

“It is important to learn what other people have learned, but too many people have lived and died for me to learn more than a small fraction of what they have learned. There is a prodigious supply of information, facts, opinions, theories, suppositions, and doctrines, but the wisdom needed to sort through the mountain of trash in the hope of finding a gold nugget is not supplied.”

— Colin Low

The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.

Bertrand Russell
